We describe root-canal treatment for appropriate cases to address inflamed or infected pulp and help save a natural tooth when possible.
Good to know
Before you come in.
Every tooth has a pulp — the part that houses the nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, root-canal treatment is what can save the tooth.
If you notice a recurring pain that does not seem to stop, contact our office. It is almost always better to save a tooth than to have it extracted and replaced.
Signs that a root canal may be needed
- Toothache
- Toothaches are common, but a sharp pain in the middle of the night that leads into a generalized headache can mean the root of the tooth is suffering.
- Abscess
- A bump near the top part of a tooth, or pus present in the mouth, is a strong sign that a root canal may be required.
- Sensitivity
- Extreme pain in response to hot and cold food and drink is a good indicator.
- Discoloration
- Dark discoloration on the tooth points to a pulp that has deteriorated. This is a severe sign — call us rather than waiting it out.
How treatment usually goes
The first appointment
Root canals are often a two-appointment procedure. The first appointment takes up to an hour.
A crown at the second
Most of the tooth is lost during the procedure, so it is capped with a dental crown at a second appointment to restore its appearance.
