Crowns help restore teeth that are broken, heavily restored, or treated with root-canal therapy, among other indications.

Care typically includes evaluation, preparation, impressions, and final cementation.

Good to know

Before you come in.

A dental crown is close to what it sounds like — a crown, or cap, for your tooth. It lets a dentist restore the form and function of a damaged tooth without needing to extract it, and it is always best to save as much of your own tooth and enamel as possible.

Crowns are also used where severe decay has already cost a tooth a large amount of its structure.

Reasons a crown may be recommended

  • A tooth that is broken or fractured
  • A decayed tooth
  • Cosmetic benefits
  • A large or fractured filling
  • A tooth that has had a root canal

How a crown is placed

  1. Consultation and exam

We examine the tooth and develop a plan with you.

  2. Dental impressions

We take impressions so the crown is made to a precise fit for your tooth.

  3. Treating decay or infection

Any decay or infection is treated and resolved before the crown is placed.

  4. Fitting and placing the crown

Once the crown is ready, we fit it to the tooth and place it.
