Extractions are listed among our services. Removing a tooth is considered when it cannot reasonably be restored, and we would always discuss the alternatives with you first.

It is almost always better to save a tooth than to have it extracted and replaced, so most of this page is about what comes before that decision. Your dentist will explain what to expect and provide aftercare instructions for your specific treatment.

Why it comes up

When a tooth may need to come out.

These are the situations that generally lead to an extraction being discussed. Whether any of them applies to a particular tooth is a question for an examination rather than for a list.

Reasons a tooth may not be savable

  • Decay that has gone further than a filling or a crown can hold
  • A fracture that runs below the gum line
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened a tooth in the bone
  • A tooth that root-canal treatment cannot save, or where an infection has not settled
  • A tooth that has broken down around an old, failing restoration

What we would look at first

  • A filling, when enough healthy tooth is left to hold one
  • A crown, when a tooth is broken or heavily restored but sound below
  • Root-canal treatment, when the pulp is infected but the tooth itself can be kept

Afterwards

Replacing a tooth that has been removed.

Not every gap has to be filled, and where one does there is more than one way to do it. Each of these is listed among our services, and each suits a different situation.

Options we list for replacing a tooth

  • A bridge, which is fixed in place and spans the gap using the teeth on either side
  • A partial or complete denture, which is removable
  • A dental implant consultation, to talk through a fixed replacement

Questions worth asking us.

Ask us at your appointment

  • Whether this tooth could still be saved, and what that would involve
  • What is likely to happen if it is left alone
  • What can be treated in this office and what would be referred
  • What replacing the tooth afterwards would involve
  • What it will cost, and what your insurance covers
